History
Bilateral relations between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia were established on June 9, 1934 [1] .
During the Great Patriotic War, Soviet troops participated in the liberation of Czechoslovak territory from the Nazis. About 150 thousand Red Army soldiers were killed here [2] .
In 1968, a period of political reform began in Czechoslovakia, which was called the Prague Spring . This period was interrupted by the troops of the Warsaw Pact Organization , as a result of which 108 civilians were killed. The military presence of the USSR in the country continued until 1991 [3] .
Diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Czech Republic were established on January 1, 1993. The Czech Republic joined NATO on March 12, 1999, and the European Union on May 1, 2004.
An important role in relations is played by visits by heads of state and high-level meetings. The first president of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, visited Prague in January 1993 and signed a number of agreements with Vaclav Havel . In March 2006, Vladimir Putin paid an official visit to the Czech Republic. In April 2007, Czech President Vaclav Klaus met with his Russian counterpart in Moscow. Consultations are regularly held at the level of deputy foreign ministers and parliamentary committees [1] .
Russia maintains an embassy in Prague and consulates general in Brno and Karlovy Vary [4] [5] [6] , while the Czech Republic has an embassy in Moscow and consulates general in St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg [7] . Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to the Czech Republic is Alexander Zmeevsky [8] .
The legal framework of bilateral relations consists of 80 agreements and treaties.
Economic Cooperation
Russia exports to the Czech Republic mineral fuel, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy products, equipment and vehicles. Russia purchases toys, medical devices, chemicals and pharmaceuticals in the Czech Republic [9] .
In 2012, trade between countries reached a record $ 14.0 billion. In 2014, as a result of the European Union sanctions policy and falling energy prices, foreign trade decreased by 13.9% and amounted to 11.8 billion dollars. For 11 months of 2015, trade amounted to 6.9 billion US dollars [9] .
In 2013, Russia paid the Czech Republic Soviet debt of $ 3.6 billion to the Czech Republic [10] .
