Content
Getting
- Obtained by the action of acetic acid on barium oxide, barium hydroxide or barium carbonate :
Physical Properties
Barium acetate forms colorless crystals of tetragonal syngony , space group I 4 1 / a , cell parameters a = 0.9901 nm, c = 2.7362 nm, Z = 16.
During crystallization from aqueous solutions, it forms crystalline hydrates:
- at temperatures below 25 ° C - Ba (CH 3 COO) 2 • 3H 2 O trihydrate
- at a temperature of 25 ÷ 41 ° C - monohydrate Ba (CH 3 COO) 2 • H 2 O
- at temperatures above 41 ° C - anhydrous Ba (CH 3 COO) 2
Chemical Properties
- When heated, decomposes into barium carbonate and acetone :
- Decomposed by strong acids:
Application
- As a mordant when dyeing wool and chintz .
