Getting

  • Obtained by the action of acetic acid on barium oxide, barium hydroxide or barium carbonate :
BaO+2CH3COOH→Ba(CH3COO)2+H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {BaO + 2 \ CH_ {3} COOH \ {\ xrightarrow {\}} \ Ba (CH_ {3} COO) _ {2} + H_ {2} O}}}

Physical Properties

Barium acetate forms colorless crystals of tetragonal syngony , space group I 4 1 / a , cell parameters a = 0.9901 nm, c = 2.7362 nm, Z = 16.

During crystallization from aqueous solutions, it forms crystalline hydrates:

  • at temperatures below 25 ° C - Ba (CH 3 COO) 2 • 3H 2 O trihydrate
  • at a temperature of 25 ÷ 41 ° C - monohydrate Ba (CH 3 COO) 2 • H 2 O
  • at temperatures above 41 ° C - anhydrous Ba (CH 3 COO) 2

Chemical Properties

  • When heated, decomposes into barium carbonate and acetone :
Ba(CH3COO)2→150oCBaCO3+(CH3)2CO{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Ba (CH_ {3} COO) _ {2} \ {\ xrightarrow {150 ^ {o} C}} \ BaCO_ {3} + (CH_ {3}) _ {2} CO} }}
  • Decomposed by strong acids:
Ba(CH3COO)2+H2SOfour→BaSOfour+CH3COOH{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Ba (CH_ {3} COO) _ {2} + H_ {2} SO_ {4} \ {\ xrightarrow {\}} \ BaSO_ {4} + CH_ {3} COOH}}}

Application

  • As a mordant when dyeing wool and chintz .
