Song
The song tells about a young man who cannot reach his girlfriend (who probably cheated on him), despite the fact that she, as a hero, is at home.
In his last big interview, Lennon said that the lyrics were inspired by the song “Silhouettes,” recorded in 1957 by The Rays [1] .
In his book “Revolution in the Head,” Ian MacDonald , a well-known Beatles researcher, noted that the text of the middle section (“If I were you, I’m lies that I heard before, when you gave me no reply ” [2] ) was the most“ powerful ”fragment of all the Beatles songs at that time [3] .
The song is written in the key in C major and has the usual AABA structure for a variety of popular songs (couplet - couplet - middle section - couplet) without choruses.
Song Recording
Initially Lennon planned to give this song to Tommy Quickly [4] (to Brian Epstein's ward), so at first the band recorded only a demo version of the song. This recording took place on June 3, 1964, with Jimmy Nicol sitting behind the drum set instead of Ringo Starr (who had a sore throat). Tommy Quickly, however, did not record this song; subsequently the mentioned de-recording was included in the compilation of Anthology 1 [5] .
Actually the song (already with Starr) was recorded on September 30 at the Abby Road studio; A total of 8 doubles were recorded. Writing down the fifth take, the group tried to perform the middle section twice (which would extend the song for a minute), but then they abandoned this idea [5] .
Initially, Lennon intended to play a higher part in harmonically rich fragments of the song, but when recording it turned out that his voice was out of order, therefore McCartney played the top notes [6] .
- In the recording participated: [7]
- John Lennon - twice recorded and mixed vocals, rhythm guitar, claps
- Paul McCartney - hears, bass guitar, claps
- George Harrison - rhythm guitar clapping
- Ringo Starr - drums, claps
- George Martin - Piano
Interesting fact
- The lyrics were pure fantasy, as in the UK in the early 1960s, telephones for young people were virtually inaccessible [8] . Lennon himself in an interview, admitted that he “did not call the girl even once in his life. Because the phones were not a part of the life of British teenagers ” [5] .
