[5] Israel Zilber represented Latvia at the USSR team chess championships in 1953 (took second place on the seventh board: +4, = 2, −1), 1955 (fourth board: +2, = 5, −2), 1958 ( first board: +1, = 1, −5), 1960 (fifth board: 2.5 out of 7), 1962 (second place on the fourth board: +4, = 3, −1) and 1963 (fourth board: 6 out of 9). US Chess Career
In 1974, Israel Zilber emigrated first to Israel , and then to the United States . In 1979, he played in a traditional tournament in Hastings , [12] and the following year he won an open tournament in the Swiss city of Biel . His name can also be found among the participants in the international tournament in Manchester . [13] But still, the life of Israel Zilber in the United States was unsuccessful. He earned some time playing in New York's Central Park with casual visitors. [14] This stretch of his life was included in the 1993 American film “ Finding Bobby Fischer, ” where one of the characters is a Russian player with a sign “For five dollars - a photo or a party with the man who defeated Tal .” Further information about the fate of Israel Zilber is contradictory - according to some accounts, he died in winter as a homeless person, [15] and according to others - his death still needs official confirmation.
