History
The museum was created in 1924 within the walls of the closed Kirillo-Belozersky monastery as a branch of the Cherepovets district provincial museum. In 1926, he gained independence. Since 1930, the museum was taken over by the Kirillovsky department of public education.
Since 1957, the Kirillovsky restoration site was created, which allowed it to carry out emergency operations on its own, which was long run by the Moscow architect Sergey Sergeevich Podyapolsky .
By the decision of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR in 1968, the museum received a new status and name - the Kirillo-Belozersky Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve. In addition to the monuments of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, architectural ensembles of the Ferapontov and Goritsky monasteries were assigned to him with the aim of studying, protecting and monitoring the progress of restoration works. In 1975, the branch of the museum in the Ferapontov Monastery became known as the Museum of Dionysius's Frescoes, and in 1979 the Belozersky Museum became a branch of the museum.
During perestroika, museum attendance dropped four times in 1993. Restoration work was not financed, the expeditionary activity of the museum ceased. However, since 1991, the museum-reserve entered the new water tourist route “Moscow - St. Petersburg”, which made it possible to significantly increase the attendance and, as a result, the museum’s own income. On this route, Kirillov became the hallmark and the most visited tourist object of the Vologda region.
In 1997, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve was included in the State collection of especially valuable objects of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation . In 2000, a branch of the museum, the Museum of Frescoes of Dionysius [1] was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
Currently, the museum is a major regional cultural center. Many new exhibitions are opened every year, scientific conferences are held, and the monuments are being actively restored.
