History
The Bnei Brit Library, founded in Jerusalem in 1892 , was the first public library in Palestine to serve the interests of the Jewish community. The library was located on Bnei Brit Street, between the Mea Shearim district and the Russian Compound . Ten years later, the library, which by then was renamed Midrash Abarbanel, moved to Ethiopia Street . In 1920 , when the Hebrew University began to emerge, the library's collection became the basis for the university library. When the Hebrew University was opened five years later, the collection of books moved to Mount Scopus .
In 1948 , when access to the university’s buildings on Mount Scopus was blocked, most books were temporarily transferred to another university building in the Terra Sancta building in Rehavia. By this time, the university's collection amounted to more than one million books. For lack of space, some of the books were placed in separate storage facilities throughout the city. In 1960, the collection moved to a new building, built specifically for the library on the Givat Ram campus.
In the late 1960s , when the university’s new educational complex on Mount Scopus was opened and the law faculties, as well as the humanities and social faculties returned there, the faculty branches of the library were also opened, which reduced the influx of visitors in the central building of the library.
In 2007, it was officially recognized by the National Library of the State of Israel after the adoption of the National Library Act. The law, which came into force after numerous delays on July 23, 2008 , changed the name of the library to “The National Library of Israel” and temporarily turned it into a subsidiary of the university. Subsequently, the library became fully independent, jointly owned by the Government of Israel (50%), Hebrew University (25%), and some other organizations.
