Novy Urengoy is a city in Russia , in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District , the first largest city in the district, one of the few Russian regional cities that surpass the administrative center of its federal subject ( Salekhard ) in terms of population and industrial development [2] . The city emerged during the development of Tyumen oil and is located on the banks of the river Evoyakha , the Pura tributary. The Tamcharayukha and Sedayakha rivers flow through the city [3] and divide it into two parts - the Northern and the Southern. The territory of the urban district is surrounded on all sides by the Purovsky District .

The population is 116,938 [1] people (as of 2019). As the production center of the largest gas-bearing region, Novy Urengoy is the unofficial gas “capital” of Russia [4] (less commonly referred to as the “gas production capital” [5] ).
Etymology
Novy Urengoi emerged as a gas industry town near the Urengoi gas field , named after the village of Urengoi , located 75 kilometers east of Novy Urengoy.
Status and Local Government
The city as an administrative-territorial unit of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug has the status of a city of district significance [6] . Within the framework of local self-government, it forms the municipality of the same name with the status of the urban district as the only settlement in its structure [7] .

Chapters
History
In 1949, by order of Stalin , the construction of the Salekhard - Igarka transpolar railway began in the circumpolar tundra. The road was built by tens of thousands of people who, for the most part, were prisoners of the GULAG . On the former trading post Urengoi builders planned to stay for a long time. However, after the death of Stalin, the work was curtailed, the road to the beginning of the 1960s turned out to be unnecessary and received the name " dead ." The image of this branch was presented on a map-diagram of railway tracks, located on one of the walls of the railway station of the city of Tyumen .
About the 501st and 503rd construction sites for a long time was not mentioned anywhere, but the work of the builders did not turn out to be in vain - it helped seismic prospectors and drillers to discover the Urengoy fields and equip them at a faster pace.
In January 1966, the seismic station of V. Tsybenko, which was the pioneer of the Urengoy structure, occupied the barracks of an abandoned prison camp of the 503rd construction site .
On June 6, 1966, the team of master V. Polupanova drilled the first exploratory well, and a new unique natural gas field appeared on the country's geological map - Urengoiskoye .
On September 22, 1973, a symbolic peg with a sign “Yagelnaya” was hammered on the site of the future city, as the village was called at first, and on December 23 a motorcade arrived to build the city. On June 19, 1975, the drilling of the first production well was completed.
August 18, 1975 there was a state registration of the village of New Urengoy. On September 25, 1975, the construction of the airport began, in October the first technical flight was made.
In 1976, the first children were born in Sveta Popkova and Andrei Bazilev in Novy Urengoy. On September 1, 1976, the first school opened, and 72 students sat at their desks.
In January 1978, the Urengoygasdobycha Production Association was formed. On April 22, 1978, the first integrated gas treatment unit was commissioned in Urengoy, and commercial operation of the Urengoy field began . On May 30, the first billion cubic meters of Urengoy gas was produced. On April 30, 1978, fighters of the All-Union Komsomol shock detachment named after the XVIII Congress of the Young Communist League arrived in New Urengoy.
The settlement developed rapidly, gas production grew, and on June 16, 1980, it was given the status of a city called Novy Urengoy, of district importance. The year of foundation of the city is 1975 . City Day, as in most other cities, is celebrated on the first weekend of September.
In September 1982, the city received a rail link with the rest of the country [10] .
In 1983, the construction of the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod gas pipeline was completed, and since 1984, gas from Urengoy began to flow to Western Europe .
On November 5, 1984, the working settlement Korotchaevo was transferred to administrative subordination to the City Council , and on May 10, 1988 - the working settlement Limbyaiaha .
The municipal formation the city of Novy Urengoy was formed in accordance with the Law of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District of January 5, 1996 No. 34 “On the Municipal Formations of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District”.
On September 6, 1998, the Agreement between the twin cities of Novy Urengoy and San Donato Milanese ( Italy ) was signed [11] .
According to the law of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District No. 107-CJSC of December 16, 2004, the villages of Korotchaevo and Limbyaaha ceased to exist as administrative-territorial units and became part of the city of New Urengoy, as a result of which the city was one of the longest in the world - more than 80 km.
In December 2004, the Pestsovoye field was commissioned [11] .
On September 3, 2005, a Cooperation Agreement was signed with the city of Kassel ( Hessen , Germany ) [11] .
On September 3-4, 2005, New Urengoy celebrated its 30th anniversary. In the days of jubilee celebrations, an eternal flame was lit on Pamyat Square, the first fountain in the city was opened [11] .
On November 4, 2006, the official opening of Memory Square [11] took place in the Student neighborhood.
On March 24, 2007, the Agreement on cooperation between the municipalities of the city of New Urengoy and the resort city of Anapa was signed [11] .
Climate
Despite the fact that Novy Urengoy is located in the region of a temperate sharply continental climate zone, the territory of the city falls on its northernmost part, bordering the subarctic climate , and therefore the weather conditions are appropriate here. The mark of the average annual air temperature in the city ranges from −4.7 ° C, and the average annual humidity indicators are only 68%.
Winters in Novy Urengoy are long and cold (about 284 days a year). The lowest temperatures occur in January and February. And although the monthly averages of these months are −20.7 and −18.6 ° C, during this period the thermometers often drop below −30 ° C, often being kept at a mark of −45 ° C.
