Charles Mayer

As a child, he moved with his clarinet father from Germany to Russia. He lived in Moscow and St. Petersburg , learning to play the piano with his mother, and then with John Field . From the age of 15, he has toured Europe for many years. Since 1819, he conducted extensive teaching activities in St. Petersburg, where among his students was M. I. Glinka , who later recalled Mayer [4] :

He contributed more than others to the development of my musical talent ... He did not limit himself to the fact that, demanding a clear and easy execution from me, he resolutely opposed the refined and refined expression in the game, but also, if possible, reflecting on my concepts of that time, explaining to me naturally and without pedantry, the virtues of the plays, distinguishing classical from good, and these latter from bad.

In 1844, he was at the origins of the first attempt to create a conservatory in St. Petersburg (the attempt failed and was successfully repeated by Anton Rubinstein after almost 20 years). In 1850 he returned to Germany, having settled in Dresden, where he continued his concert and teaching career.

He wrote two piano concerts, several hundred salon and concert pieces for piano, as well as a collection of exercises “New Fluency School” ( German: Neue Schule der Geläufigkeit ).
