Biography
At the age of 6, he and his parents moved to Kerch-Enikale , where he received a home education. Having prepared at the Odessa Drawing School , in 1878 he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts , which he graduated in 1883, receiving the title of class artist of the 1st degree [3] .
In 1886, for the painting "Dedication of Ivan the Terrible before his death as a monk," Geller received the title of class artist of the 1st degree. His first picture on a free story, “ The Oath of Jewish Recruits, ” was acquired from the academic exhibition in 1887 by the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Arts . Since that time, Geller began to exhibit paintings on historical and everyday topics annually.
Participant of the exhibitions "St. Petersburg Society of Artists", AHRR, "Society of Artists named after A. I. Kuindzhi ", Imperial Academy of Arts [3] .
Both large works of Geller, and small ones, the number of which reaches two hundred, are almost entirely devoted to Russian life and Russian history. Jewish themes very rarely inspired Geller. Only the events of the last years of the existence of imperial Russia with the pogroms, repressions and the mass exodus of Jews from the devastated places caused him several works depicting the exceptional situation of Jews in Russia.
The artist died on January 23, 1933 and was buried in Leningrad at the Preobrazhensky Jewish cemetery [4] .
The works of P.I. Geller are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other museum and private collections.
