He is seriously wounded at the Battle of Preisis Eilau , he is considered dead for a long time, but he regains his strength and returns to his native Paris a few years later. The colonel discovers that all his property was inherited by the “widow,” who, some time after the erroneous news of his death, again married a titled and wealthy man. Shaber tries to return to his former life, meets his wife, but she does not want to know anything about her husband who has returned, since she does not want to lose her current position.
