Since 1836, the successor of Heinrich Christoph Kolbe as professor at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts (until 1854). He created works mainly in the genre of historical painting, he also painted landscapes, portraits, genre scenes. The State Hermitage Museum contains several paintings by Hildebrandt, in particular his landscapes “In the Forest” (1858) and “Winter Morning on the River” (1857, comes from the Kushelev Gallery of the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Arts ) [2] , as well as the genre painting “ Children Waiting Christmas trees ”(1840).

A characteristic example of Hildebrandt's work is the painting “The Killing of the Sons of Edward IV ” (1835, Düsseldorf, Art Museum) [3] , executed in the tradition of academic historical painting, close to everyday life. The theme of the tragic fate of the children of Edward IV, who were killed at the Tower by Richard III , the brother of the king, who declared himself his heir and became king of England, attracted many painters in the middle of the 19th century. The literary source was Shakespeare’s tragedy, “ Richard III, ” and a model in painting was the famous painting by Delaroche's “Sons of Edward IV of England” (1830, Louvre Museum ).

Among his students were, in particular, Gustav Gref [4] and Heinrich Ferdinand Hoffmann [5] .
