Coriolis parameter

Coriolis parameter - the value of the factor in the expression for the Coriolis force , equal to twice the projection on the vertical axis of the angular velocity of the Earth :

f=2Ωsin⁡φ,{\ displaystyle f = 2 \ Omega \ sin \ varphi,} {\ displaystyle f = 2 \ Omega \ sin \ varphi,}

WhereΩ {\ displaystyle \ Omega} \ Omega - the angular velocity of the Earth's rotation around the axis;φ {\ displaystyle \ varphi} \ varphi - geographical latitude of the place. When crossing the equator, the Coriolis parameter and, accordingly, the Coriolis force change sign.

The Coriolis parameter in absolute value coincides with the frequency of inertial oscillations .

The angular velocity of rotation of the Earth is:

Ω=2πT=7,2921⋅ten-fivec-one,{\ displaystyle \ Omega = {\ frac {2 \ pi} {T}} = 7.2921 \ cdot 10 ^ {- 5} ~~ c ^ {- 1},} {\ displaystyle \ Omega = {\ frac {2 \ pi} {T}} = 7.2921 \ cdot 10 ^ {- 5} ~~ c ^ {- 1},}

WhereT {\ displaystyle T} T - sidereal period of the Earth's rotation around its axis, equal to one stellar day (23 hours 56 minutes, 4.0905 seconds).
