Inscription
On July 15, 2010, according to the results of the competition for the best design of the Indian rupee sign, the Joint Cabinet of India approved the grapheme as a symbol of the national currency [1] . This sign is the crossed out letter “ र ” of Devanagari , one of the varieties of the Indian letter used at once in several official and local languages of India: in Sanskrit , Hindi , Marathi , Sindhi , Bihari , Bhili , Marvari , Konkani , Bhojpuri , Nepali , non-Uvarian language , and sometimes in Kashmiri and Romani . A characteristic feature of Devanagari writing is the upper (base) horizontal line, to which the letters “hanging” down are attached. Moreover, the symbol is similar in spelling to the Latin letter "R" without a vertical line. According to the official description of the symbol, such a similarity represents the Indian economy, both nationally and internationally; two horizontal lines with white space between them resemble the flag of India and at the same time look like an equal sign , often used in financial calculations [2] .
The author of the sign is Udaya Kumar, a student at the Indian Polytechnic Institute in Mumbai, who received 250 thousand rupees (about 5.5 thousand dollars) as a reward [3] [4] .
