Biography
Russell Hoban was born in Pennsylvania to a family of Jewish immigrants from Ostrog . His father, Abram Hoban, was the manager of the Yiddish daily newspaper Forverts and the director of the acting guild of the Bundist workers' association Arbeter Ring in Philadelphia , as well as the director of Yiddish Jewish and Russian classics, in which his son also participated. Abram Khoban died in 1936 , when his son was 11 years old, and the education of Russell and his two sisters (Tana, 1917-2002, later a photographer and illustrator, and Frida, born 1919) was carried out by his mother, Janet Dimmerman. At the age of 18, Khoban was drafted into the army, served in the Philippines and Italy , and during military service in 1944 he married Lilian Eberman, who later became a children's writer.
