History
The basis for the development was the Kalashnikov machine gun (PKM). The model was approved and the machine gun entered service with the PLA in the 1980s [3] in 1983 [1] . At first it was assumed that the Type 80 will be replaced by the Type 67 previously developed in the PRC, which has proven itself at the proving ground of the military district in Chengdu. However, then the development was curtailed, and only Type 67 GPMG remained in service [1] . Several samples of Type 80 were tested in the Chinese Navy , then they went through modernization, and the ground forces received a modification of Type 86, which was put into service by the PLA.
