Glazychev, Vyacheslav Leonidovich

Father - Leonid Dmitrievich Glazychev, a film playwright, died on the Kalinin Front in 1942. Mother - Militsa Nikolaevna Glazycheva worked as a bibliographer at the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences .

He graduated from the English special school No. 1 Mosgorono , then entered the Moscow Institute of Architecture at the Faculty of Industrial Architecture. He worked as a translator at the World Festival of Youth and Students . In 1961-1962 he studied in Warsaw . After graduating from the Moscow Architectural Institute (1963), he designed railroad and air-mail offices (until 1965), worked as an architect at Giprosvyaz , then a junior research fellow at VNIITE (1965-1967).

Together with E. A. Rosenblum in 1964, he created the Central Experimental Studio of the Union of Artists of the USSR on the subject of "environmental design", and from 1967 he moved to work as a deputy art director ^{[4] [5]} .

Since 1963, he published articles on problems of design and artistic culture in the journal Decorative Art and other publications.

In 1968, at the G.V. Plekhanov Moscow Institute of National Economy, he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of philosophical sciences on the topic "The social function of design in the system of modern capitalism." ^[6] In 1970, these materials were published as a separate monograph entitled “About Design” (in 2006, under the name “Design as It Is”, a second edition of the work was issued, supplemented by author's comments). ^[7]

After special training in 1969, Glazychev received the rank of senior lieutenant of the Airborne Forces ^[5] .

In 1977, he wrote the book “Organization of Architectural Design”, in which he described the methods of interaction between social order, design and construction, not used in the USSR. A year later, based on the materials of the book, the Central Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture attempted to defend a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Architecture on the topic "Architectural Creativity and the Organization of Architectural Design". ^{[8] The} work received positive feedback from the director of the Central Research Institute of Economics of Housing, B. R. Rubanenko , but due to the opposition of the Construction Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU, a scientific degree was not awarded (with the wording “incomplete study”) ^[5] .

He carried out a number of resonant translations into Russian of Western urban classics of the 20th century. In 1982, in his translation, a collection of translations of Kevin Lynch texts under the general name “The Image of the City” was published, and in 1986 also in his translation came out the second collection of texts of Kevin Lynch under the general name “The Perfect Form in Urban Planning”. In addition, in 1995, a translation of Roberta Graz’s book “The City in America: Residents and Authorities,” reprinted in 2008, was published in his translation.

In 1970-1984, Glazychev was the head of the department of social problems of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture , and also the head of the department of the magazine Decorative Art. In 1984-1987, he headed the department of cultural potential of cities at the Research Institute of Culture of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR . Glazychev led experimental development programs in Tikhvin , Naberezhnye Chelny and Elabuga , organizing the interaction of residents and authorities. In 1986 he joined the Union of Architects of the USSR , and a month later was elected secretary of the union. In 1988, he resigned from this post when the secretariat did not accept the Union reform program proposed by the group with Glazychev at the head ^{[4] [5]} .

In 1987, he was the chairman of the organizing committee of the Memorial society ; in 1988-1990, he was the executive secretary of the Cultural Initiative Foundation (which was the Russian branch of the Soros Foundation ). Glazychev participated in the formation of the European Academy of Urban Environment in Berlin since 1989, was a member of the board, was the head of the Moscow branch, which conducted program and advisory work in Moscow, Myshkin , Staritsa and other Russian cities. He participated in the preparation of laws on local self-government and culture ^[5] .

In 1991, at the Scientific Research Institute of Culture of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Arts on the topic “Cultural Potential of the Urban Environment” (specialty 17.00.08. - Theory and History of Cultures). ^[9] Since 1991 he was a professor at MARCHI ^{[4] [5]} .

In 1999, Glazychev ran for the post of vice-mayor of Moscow with a mayor candidate from the Union of Right Forces Sergey Kiriyenko ^{[4] [5]} . In 2005, together with G. O. Pavlovsky , M. A. Kolerov, organized the publishing house "Europe" and became its general director.

From 2005 to 2008, under the pseudonym "Mr. Mont Blanc," he participated in the analytical television program G.O. Pavlovsky's "Real Politics" on NTV . ^[ten]

He died of a heart attack on June 5, 2012 in Thailand , where he came for two weeks to work on the materials of the “Moscow Development Strategy until 2025” ^{[1] [11]} .

He was buried in Moscow at the Vvedensky cemetery (plot 22) ^[12] .
