Lustig, Branco

Branko Lustig ( Croatian Branko Lustig ; born June 10, 1932 , Osijek ) is a Croatian and American producer and actor. A native of a Jewish family, as a child, was interned in concentration camps Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen during World War II.

Biography

He began his film career as an assistant director at the film production company Jadran Film in Zagreb . In 1956 he worked as the director of the film “Do Not Look Back , Son” ( Croatian Ne okreći se sine ), a worthy drama about the Second World War. In the 1980s, Lustig worked on the short series of Fire Tornado and the sequel Fire Tornado and Ashes. In the same year he came to the United States.

In 1994, he became the first Croatian to win an Academy Award for Best Film for the film Schindler's List. Previously, he was also awarded the Golden Globe for his work on this film.

In 2001, he was awarded the second Oscar and Golden Globe for the Gladiator. Branco Lustig is the only Croat to have been awarded an Oscar twice. He worked as a producer on the films Peacemaker (1997), Hannibal (2001), Black Hawk (2001) and many others. In some films, also appeared in small roles.

Croatian President Franjo Tudjman awarded him the Order of Prince Trpimir . Honorary Doctor of the University of Zagreb (2008).

In 2008, he founded Six Point Films with Phil Blazer in Los Angeles, "to produce films that are deeply exciting and thought-provoking."

Since 2008, Lustig is the honorary president of the Jewish Film Festival in Zagreb.
