For Philadelphia, this was the second Winter Classic match after meeting in Boston with the local Bruins in 2010.
It was originally planned to host the match on January 1 at the Lincoln Financial Field football stadium, but the local Philadelphia Eagles team hosted the Washington Redskins that day in the final round of the NFL regular season .
The match was moved to the Citizens Bank Park baseball stadium, which is home to the Major League Baseball team - Philadelphia Phillies and was held on January 2, 2012.
The match ended with a strong-willed victory for hockey players from New York , 3: 2.

Match progress
In the annual outdoor match, the New York Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers. The game of two sworn enemies in the presence of almost 50 thousand spectators at the Citizens Bank Park stadium in Philadelphia developed according to a famously twisted scenario.
The day before the game, the main goalkeeper of the Philadelphians, Ilya Bryzgalov , who has recently played in far from the best way, shocked reporters, saying that he wouldn’t go to the Winter Classic in the starting line-up of his team: “I have great news and the news is even better. Great - I don't play tomorrow. The news is even better - we have a chance to win. ” After that, Bryzgalov, known for the original style of communication with the press, pleased the journalists with stories that he was going to sell his specially made guards in the "retro" style at an online auction.
The first period of the game ended with a score of zero, and truly dangerous moments could be counted on the fingers of one hand. One of them was the one-to-zero exit, where Jaromir Jagr could not beat Henrik Lundqvist .
In the second period, the game noticeably revived, which resulted in a goal breakthrough. At first, the young Flyers player Braden Shann took advantage of Henrik Lundqvist’s mistake and brought the owners of the ice ahead. For Shann, this was the first goal and the first point in the NHL . In less than two minutes, Max Talbo and Claude Giroud caught the enemy defenders in a reckless attack and masterfully played their combination, increasing the score. But the Rangers did not think to give up. Thirty seconds later, the lag was again reduced to the minimum - the fourth link created a moment that was brilliantly realized by Mike Rapp, better known for his skills in fist fights than in attacking actions. A year ago, Rapp played in the Winter Classics as part of the Pittsburgh Penguins , and then he only counted a fight with John Erskine from Washington Capitals . The teams left for the second break with the score 2: 1 in favor of the Flyers.
The Rangers got down to business in the third period, and the result was not long in coming - almost three minutes after the start of the final game segment, Rapp equalized. And then it's time to act on the loudest acquisition of the New York club - Brad Richards . The star center forward was the first to bounce off the puck and, with one touch, sent it under the crossbar of the gate of Sergei Bobrovsky , thereby taking his team forward - 3: 2. The “pilots”, who played without one of their leaders, Jaromir Jagr, for two periods (he was injured in the first period), could not create the last assault for a long time. When they succeeded, the denouement came. A few centimeters from the Lundquist goal, defender Ryan McDonagh fell on the puck, covering it. A bullet was appointed for this. Danny Brier was called to fulfill it, but he could not beat Lundqvist. A few more unsuccessful shots on goal in the last seconds, and the New York Rangers celebrate a victory in the Winter Classic.
