Biography
Young years
Lady Jane Seymour Fonda was born December 21, 1937 in New York in the family of actor Henry Fonda and Canadian- born “ socialite ” Francis Ford Brockaw (nee Seymour). Jane Fonda was named after Lady Jane Seymour , the third wife of King Henry VIII , a distant relative of her mother [1] . Jane Fonda studied at the New York Acting Studio , after which she became a model and at the same time worked in the theater. Later, she began acting in films, although the directors at first did not recognize her great acting talent and exploited her attractive appearance more. Later, Jane played in the Cat Ballu Western ( 1965 ) directed by Elliot Silverstein and Barbarella ( 1968 ) Roger Vadim , mimicking her roles in those years.
Beginning of a film career
A real career in the movie of Jane Fonda began with the charming "Incredible Story" ( 1960 ) directed by I. Logan, followed by "Walks on the Wild Side" ( 1962 ), in the same year, Jane starred in the director Chuckman 's film "Chapman's Report" , then in the movie Sunday in New York . Only then did Jane make her talk about herself for real, although criticism assessed all of her work ambiguously. Some, without disputing the abilities of the young actress, said that the films themselves did not deserve attention, others, on the contrary, considered them interesting and noted the success of Jane Fonda, which she achieved in these films. All the roles that Jane Fonda played in the movie can be divided into two groups. In some, she appeared in the image of a “sexual cat”, in others, on the contrary, she tried to break out of the role imposed on her and manifest itself primarily as a dramatic actress.
In search of independence, Jane Fonda moved to France in the mid-1960s, where she met the French director Roger Vadim , who soon became her first husband (many other novels are attributed to the actress, but she officially entered into marriage three times). Roger Vadim removes Jane in the sensational erotic film Barbarella . As the director recalled: “To shoot Jane was a real pleasure. She was attentive to my instructions, disciplined, punctual, always striving to do everything as best as possible, in a word, she turned out to be a true professional ” [2] . The marriage with Roger Vadim lasted from 1965 to 1973. September 28, 1968 they had a daughter, Vanessa. She was named after actress Vanessa Redgrave . [3]
Jane signed a second marriage with Tom Hayden , a student and anti-war activist of the New Left . This acquaintance involved her in political activities, and thanks to him, Jane began to participate in anti-war demonstrations. July 7, 1973 they had a son, Troy O`Donovan Hayden. This marriage lasted from 1973 to 1990. [four]
The third husband in 1991 was Ted Turner , a movie mogul, owner of a cable television network. But in 2001, this marriage ended in divorce, because of Turner's betrayal.
Success
Jane has already proved herself to be a brilliant dramatic actress, starring in the film directed by S. Pollack, “Hunted horses are shot, isn't it?” ( 1969 ). Despite the fact that the dramatic talent of Jane Fonda was fully revealed in this film, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts did not award her an Oscar . Then another actor, Gig Young , who played the role of the leading dance marathon, received the gold statuette.
Although, perhaps, it was thanks to Jane Fond that the Sydney Pollack film got into the USSR , because by that time, under the influence of her second husband Tom Hayden, she had begun to engage in politics.
Fonda repeatedly gave anti-war speeches in churches and universities, sponsored the Vietnam Veterans Against War organization (which was led by John Kerry for some time) and the Winter Soldiers investigation, during which US troops spoke about the crimes of the US armed forces in Vietnam . At that time, she did not hide her leftist views, calling herself a revolutionary. In one of her speeches to students, she said: “If you understood what communism was , you would have hoped and prayed, kneeling down so that we would someday become communists.”
Her trip to North Vietnam in 1972, at the height of the war, caused a real storm in the American press. American right-wing conservatives hit her in all the available media. The actress earned the nickname " Hanoi Jane ." Then she for the first time for several years stopped acting. Thanks to the indicated demarche, the actress entered the unofficial “Top 10 American Traitors of All Time”, [5] although from a legal point of view, her act cannot be considered an act of treason, since she, unlike military and civil servants, was not bound by an oath and no other obligations to the federal government, and US law does not punish ordinary citizens for expressing protest in this way [6] .
In the second half of the 1970s, Jane returned to the cinema and was successful. In 1976, she starred in The Blue Bird , a Soviet-American musical fairy-tale film based on the play of the same name by Maurice Meterlink . In 1978, for the role of the American playwright Lilian Hellman in the film "Julia" ( 1977 ), she received the Golden Globe as the best actress.
Jane Fonda received her first Oscar for her role as a prostitute in the movie Klyut ( 1971 ). The second time she was awarded this prize for her role in the film "Homecoming" (1978), which reflected her impressions of her experiences during the Vietnam War.
In the late 1970s, Jane founded her own company, IPS Films. Her paintings immediately attracted the attention of critics. This is primarily a thriller with elements of the detective “Chinese Syndrome” ( 1979 ), which tells about the silence of the accident at the nuclear power plant, and “ On Golden Lake ” ( 1981 ), where Fonda played a duet with her father . Her last works were roles in the films "Old Gringo" ( 1989 ) and "Stanley and Iris" ( 1990 ).
Leaving the movie
In 1990, after the failure of the movie “Stanley and Iris”, the Foundation did not act in film for several years, announced that it had decided to permanently leave the cinema. Like some other actresses, she wanted the audience to remember her young. But, nevertheless, she continues her social activities and constantly flashes on the pages of secular chronicles. She demonstrates an active lifestyle, gives various tips regarding health and appearance.
In November 1993, the Foundation traveled to Moscow with Ted Turner , who was awarded the International Leonardo Prize .
During one of her visits to Russia, Jane Fonda took part in the famous race around the Kremlin . The foundation has developed a well-known set of exercises on aerobics . To do this, she released a special book, “Jane Fonda. Exercises ”and simple instructions for it, recorded on videotapes , and then organized a network of gyms throughout America.
Return to the cinema and television work
In 2005, Fonda returned to the cinema, playing in the film “If Mother-in-Law is a Monster” in a duet with Jennifer Lopez . After she starred in the comedy " Cool Georgia " and " Continue to live yourself ."
In 2012, Fonda moved to television, where she took on a supporting role in the HBO News series, which earned her two nominations for an Emmy Award. Also in 2012, she looked for a regular role on television, eventually subscribing to the pilot of the sitcom “What Now?” For ABC [7] . The show was not ordered by the channel. In 2014, she teamed up with Lily Tomlin for the sitcom Grace and Frankie , who ordered Netflix [8] .
In 2015, Fonda’s work in the drama of the Italian director Paolo Sorrentino, “ Youth ”, in which, according to critics, she showed a grotesquely generalized parody of herself, was highly appreciated and noted with a number of awards, including the Golden Globe nomination.
