Hiyoshi taisha

Hiyoshi taisha ( 日 吉 大 社 ) is a Shinto shrine in the city of Sakamoto, part of the city of Otsu , Shiga Prefecture. The area of ​​the entire complex is 400,000 sq.m. The complex includes western and eastern sanctuaries.

Hiyoshi taisha is located at the foot of Hiei Mountain and is connected to the mountain by cable railway.

History

  • 715 - the Kodziki annals mention the sanctuary (大 山 咋 神).

In the Middle Ages, the idol acquired a Buddhist color under the influence of Enryaku-ji Temple .

Oda Nobunaga in 1571 burned the Enryaku-ji Temple and the Hiyoshi-taisha Shrine. However, at the end of the 16th century, the sanctuary was restored in its modern form.
