Description
It begins on the eastern slopes of Mount Vaialeale (1100 meters above sea level), from where it flows north. When it flows into the Pacific Ocean, it forms a gulf.
The average water discharge is 6.12 cubic meters per second, [2] the second largest in the Hanalei gutter, although it has a sewage basin of 49 km 2 , only the sixth largest on the island of Kauai . The reason is being in the region with the highest annual rainfall on the planet.
Rolling rapidly from the mountains, in the flat part, the river flows through the territory of the Hanalei National Reserve and numerous taro farms (60% of the Hawaiian taro is grown in this area).
The Hanalei River is the habitat for many amphidromic species, including gobies (5 local varieties). Two endemic crustaceans live here, the edible snail hīhīwai ( Neritina granosa ), and in the upper reaches there is a threatened species - the highly adapted “snail Newcomb” ( Erinna newcombi ).
Status
On July 30, 1998, Hanalei was listed on the American Heritage Rivers by US President Bill Clinton . The main bridge over the river (still lane) is located on the Hawaii Route 560 , and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places . [3]
