Уuvintas [1] ( lit. Žuvinto biosferos rezervatas ) is a biosphere reserve (reserve) in the southwestern part of Lithuania , on the left bank of the Neman river basin [2] .
The reserve was founded in 1937 (within modern borders - since 1946 ) [3] to protect habitats of waterfowl , relict and rare plants , as well as a typical landscape of this part of the country [4] . The reserve area is over 5400 ha , including forest about 1300 ha [3] . On the territory of the reserve there are Lake Жuvintas , the adjacent bogs with pine and meadows [4] adjacent to it.
The flora of the reserve includes 473 species of terrestrial and 142 species of aquatic plants [2] . The fauna is represented by 36 species of mammals , 211 - birds , 6 - reptiles , 7 - amphibians [5] . Of the mammals, the most characteristic are the fox , otter , raccoon dog , roe deer , brown hare ; wild boar , elk , badger , pine marten , squirrel are found [4] . Of the birds in the reserve, heron , stork , gray crane , common curlew , turukhtan , and black grouse live [3] . In the area of the lake, there are many predators, such as peregrine falcon , common arboretum , woodpecker , kestrel , goshawk , mackerel , golden eagle , osprey and white-tailed eagle [2] . But the main value of the reserve is the naturally acclimatized mute swan [3] .
