Career
He began his career in 1982 as part of the Sunday “ Chemist ”, performed for ten seasons, during which time he became the silver and double bronze medalist of the Allied championships and scored 119 (44 + 75) points in 393 matches held.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he signed a contract with the Finnish club TPN . Speaking under the leadership of Vladimir Yurzinov, he twice became the champion of the country, adding to this silver awards, as well as a victory in the European Cup . In total, he has 183 matches for TPN, in which he scored 70 (19 + 51) points.
After the 1995/96 season, which Smirnov spent in the Austrian Kapfenberg, he entered into an agreement with the Norwegian club Storhamar. In his first season, he scored 54 (18 + 36) points in 45 matches. For five seasons spent in Norway, Smirnov became the team leader, twice won the championship title. Before the start of the 2001/02 season, he returned to Voskresensk, where for the first time he was a playing coach. For two years in the “Chemist” held 114 matches, in which he scored 28 (8 + 20) points.
In 2003, Smirnov again signed a contract with Storhamar, with whom in the same season for the third time in his career he became the champion of Norway. In total, the team spent eight seasons, setting a Norwegian championship record for assists and scored points among defenders (206 and 275, respectively), and also becoming the best foreign player in the history of the Norwegian championships according to a survey conducted by the VG newspaper. In 2006, he completed his career.
Team
As part of the Russian national team, Smirnov took part in four world championships ( 1993 , 1994 , 1995 , 1996 ), in the first of which he won gold medals. He also performed at the 1994 Olympics , where he became the fourth with the team. In total, he has 8 (2 + 6) points in 35 matches held for the national team.
Coaching
In the 2001/02 season , Smirnov, speaking for the Sunday “Chemist”, held the position of playing coach. A year after the end of his career, the player became the head coach of the Norwegian club Storhamar. In his first season, he led the club to the championship.
After working another year in Norway, on June 16, 2009 Smirnov accepted the offer of Cherepovets Severstal , where he, along with Dmitry Kvartalnov, took the post of assistant coach Andrei Pyatanov [1] . Before the start of the 2011/12 season , Smirnov became the head coach of Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik [2] . November 17, 2011 he was replaced by Vladimir Golubovich [3] . On December 11, Smirnov decided to return to Cherepovets, where he replaced Vladimir Tsyplakov as assistant to Dmitry Kvartalnov [4] . On February 28, 2012, just before the start of the playoffs, Smirnov was appointed acting head coach of Severstal [5] .
On August 5, 2013, it became known about the appointment of Alexander Smirnov as assistant coach of Amur HC Evgeny Popikhin .
