According to modern concepts, an underground layer of ice can exist on Mars up to 30-40 degrees of both southern and northern latitude. Therefore, it is likely that underground ice can be found in the vicinity of the Heinlein Crater, which makes it a possible place for human settlement. In winter, the southern polar cap extends to approximately 45 ° south latitude and covers the crater with a layer of frozen carbon dioxide , that is, dry ice.
