Biography
School
Felton began his basketball career at Latta High School. During his appearances for the school team, Raymond scored 2992 points, making 117 accurate three-point shots. The team won the state championship twice, and the overall win-loss rate was 104–9.
Playing for the school team, Felton twice became the “Basketball Mr. South Carolina”, and also won the award for the best basketball player among schoolchildren named Naismith.
College
Felton entered the University of North Carolina and in his first year of study was selected as the player of the Carolina Year. He scored 12 points on average per match, and also gave 236 assists. In his second season at college, Felton was among the nominees for the Bob Cousey Award and the Naismith Prize for Best Player of the Year among US students . He scored 11.5 points and made 7.1 assists per game on average [1] .
In his third and final season at college, Felton led Carolina to the NCAA championship . This was the fourth North Carolina victory in history (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005). In the final game against Illinois , Raymond scored the most important three-point shot against Deron Williams at the end of the game, which allowed to equalize the score 65-65. In a retaliatory attack by Illinois, Felton intercepted the ball, after a foul he successfully completed two free throws, setting the final winning score in the match. Raymond finished the season with indicators - 12.9 points and 6.9 assists on average per game [1] . He won the Bob Cousey Prize, which is a recognition that he was a point guard for that year at the NCAA. [2]
NBA
Draft
Felton was selected under the general 5th number in the 2005 NBA draft by the Charlotte Bobcats team, after two other point guards Deron Williams and Chris Paul .
2005–2010: Charlotte Bobcats
Felton started his first season unsuccessfully, there was a lack of experience and confidence in his actions, but in the second half of the championship he played out and issued a series of productive matches. He made 13 doubles in the course of the season, and in the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers Felton scored 30 points in 10 assists. [3] Raymond entered the starting five in 54 matches out of 80 and scored 11.9 points and made 5.6 assists on average per match [1] . At the end of the season, Felton was selected as the second NBA rookie team [4] .
In the 2006-2007 season, Felton became the main Bobcats point guard, he improved almost all of his performance compared to last season. One of the reasons was the increased level of teammates Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace , as well as the strengthening of the team in the person of newcomers Adam Morrison and Walter Herrmann . Despite Raymond’s successful season, the team didn’t make it to the playoffs.
In the 2007-2008 season, Jason Richardson came to Charlotte, but this did not help the Lynx, many players were injured and this damaged the team’s overall progress. “Bobcats” again did not get into the playoffs. With a general increase in all Felton's scores, he still threw poorly due to a three-point line.
In the 2008 NBA draft, the Bobcats chose JJ Augustine , a promising young point guard, this increased competition for time on the floor. Despite the fact that Felton remained a player of the starting five, his time on the court decreased by almost five minutes on average per match, compared with last season. In the same championship, an experienced head coach Larry Brown joined the team. At Raymond, almost all indicators worsened, including the average number of points, assists per match, and the percentage of hits from the game fell. The Bobcats could not make it to the playoffs. At the end of the season, Felton became a limited free agent, he could sign a contract with another team, but decided to stay at Charlotte [5] .
Stephen Jackson and Tyson Chandler joined the team in the 2009-2010 season , which made the Bobcats contenders for the playoffs. Charlotte became the best team in terms of the number of points that allowed their opponent to score 93.8 points on average per match. Felton became the third in the team by the number of points scored for the season, he was ahead only of Wallace and Jackson. For the first time in their history, the Bobcats entered the playoffs, where they could not win a single victory, losing in the first round of Orlando Magic [6] .
2010–2011: New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets
Felton became a free agent and on July 11, 2010 signed a two-year contract with the New York Knicks for a total of $ 15.8 million [7] . Raymond was elected co-captain of the Knicks for the 2010-2011 season , along with Amare Stademayr . At the beginning of the championship, Felton had some problems with confidence, but closer to the middle he reached a good level of play and became one of the favorites of New York fans. During the season, Raymond scored a number of decisive shots, including a decisive three-point shot with a deviation in the game against the Toronto Raptors [8] [9] . Felton's confident play was one of the reasons that “New York” again became contenders for access to the playoffs, for the first time since 2004. However, on February 22, 2011, Raymond was traded to the Denver Nuggets , as part of the deal to transfer Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Knicks [10] . With the New York team, Felton showed his best results in the NBA, he scored 17.1 points and made 9.0 assists on average per game, despite this, the team management decided to part with him. Raymond spent the remainder of the season at the Nuggets, mostly leaving the bench and replacing Ty Loyson . “Denver” reached the playoffs, where they lost to the “ Oklahoma City Thunder ” led by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in five matches [11] . Felton spent all five games gaining 11.6 points and making 4.2 assists on average per match [1] .
2011-2012: Portland Trail Blazers
On June 23, 2011, during the 2011 NBA draft, Felton was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers for veteran Andre Miller , as well as a second-round pick for the 2011 draft ( Jordan Hamilton ) [12] .
In Portland, Felton became the main point guard. In the first match against the Nuggets, he scored 25 points and gave 6 assists. In the second match of the season against Denver, Raymond got a foot tram. The tram was not serious, Felton missed just 2 games.
2012–2014: Return to the New York Knicks
On July 16, 2012, Raymond Felton and Kurt Thomas were exchanged at the New York Knicks for Jared Jeffries , Dan Gadzurich , the rights to Kostas Papanikolau and Georgios Printezis and the draft pick of the second round [13] .
2014: Dallas
On June 25, 2014, New York sent Felton and Tyson Chandler to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Samuel Dalembert , Jose Calderon , Shane Larkin , Wayne Ellington and two picks in the second round of the 2014 draft [14] .
