Lassanis, Georgios

Georgios Lassanis ( Greek Γεώργιος Λασσάνης ; 1793 , Kozani , Ottoman Empire , - 1870 , Athens , Greece ) - leader of the Greek revolutionary organization Filiki Eteria , Greek general and minister [1] , as well as a writer, playwright and poet .

Biography

The early years

Born into the family of a prominent merchant. He remained an orphan at a young age after the death of his father, returning home from a trade trip to Vienna. Received primary education in Kozani. At the age of 20, he immigrated to Budapest , where he worked for some time in the company of his fellow countryman Takiadzis.

In 1813 he left for Leipzig , where he entered the university at the faculty of philosophy. After graduation, he left for Russia. In Moscow, he was initiated into the secret Greek revolutionary society " Filiki Eteria ". In 1818 he settled in Odessa , where he taught at the commercial school of the Greek community of the city.

Theater

The theater was one of the parties in the revolutionary preparation of the characters. In 1819 , in Odessa, a play by Lassanis “ Hellas and a stranger” was staged, in which Lassanis also acted as an actor. The premiere was attended by the mayor Alexander Langeron , who congratulated Lassanis as a playwright and actor. The play aroused the enthusiasm noted by the Viennese Greek journal The Scientist Hermes .

In the same year, the tragedy of Lassanis “Armody and Aristogiton” [2] was staged in Odessa.

Greek Revolution

After Alexander Ipsilanti led the “Eteria” and set about preparing the uprising, Lassanis left the teaching and Odessa in 1820 and followed it. Lassanis took part in a meeting on October 5-7, 1820 in Izmail [3] and February 16, 1821 in the Chisinau house of Sister Ipsilanti, where the final decision was made to start the uprising [4] .

Lassanis was among the dozen figures who crossed the Prut on February 21, 1821, together with Ipsilanti, who proclaimed the beginning of the revolution [5] .

By order of February 25, Ipsilanti appointed Lassanis as his adjutant. [6]

Lassanis took part in the battle of Dragashani , where the color of the Greek students of Russia, Austria and Wallachia died. After the defeat, Lassanis was sent to Rothen Turm, Transylvania , where he received permission from the Austrians to transit through their territory for Ipsilanti and the 7 revolutionaries accompanying him [7] .

Instead of the promised transit, Ipsilanti and his escort spent 2 years in the dungeons of the Palanok castle in Mukachevo , and in 1823 they were transferred to the Terezin fortress in Bohemia [8] .

After spending 7 years in the Austrian dungeons, the figures were released on November 22, 1827 , after the intervention of the new Russian emperor Nicholas I.

Alexander Ipsilanti was already at his death and died on January 19/31, 1828, in Vienna, in the arms of his beloved, Princess Constantia Razumovskaya, and Lassanis. Before his death, Ipsilanti Lassanis read to him from the newspaper "Austrian Observer" a message that John Kapodistrias was already in Malta, heading to Greece. In response, Ipsilanti managed to say: “Glory to God” [9] .

After the death of Ipsilanti Lassanis through France, he reached fighting Greece, where he took part in the last battles of the Liberation War in central Greece under the command of Dmitry Ipsilanti .

In May 1829, he was the commander of a garrison in Thebes .

“Alexander Ipsilanti launched the Hellenic War of Independence. His brother ended the war with a victorious battle at Peter . In both cases, the adjutant was a teacher, theater writer and revolutionary Lassanis ” [10] .

Subsequent years

In the recreated Greek state, Lassanis was appointed inspector general of the army of eastern Central Greece. In 1837 , in the first government of King Otto , Lassanis was appointed Minister of Finance [11] .

The writings of Lassanis include school books, theatrical works, poems and historical texts, political treatises and translations. Lassanis died in Athens, at the age of 77 in 1870 .

Memory

  • In the city of Kozani, his father’s house is preserved. The house is described as a historical monument and bears the name of George Lassanis. October 11, 2008 (on the 96th anniversary of the liberation of the city from the Turks), the municipal archive of maps was located here.
  • Festive music, theater and sports events of the municipality, held at the end of summer, are named "Lassania" in his honor.
  • The house in Athens, where Lassanis spent the last years of his life, is also described as a historical monument and bears his name. Since 1991, the house houses a museum of Greek folk musical instruments [12] .
  • The basketball club of the city of Kozani bears the name "Lassanis".
