The Palmburg bridge ( German: Palmburger Brücke , also Berlin ) - the former bridge in Kaliningrad , part of the Kaliningrad ring road, was thrown across both channels of the Pregol . Built in 1938 [2] . Two of the four lanes, partially destroyed during the Great Patriotic War , were not restored. The bridge was dismantled in 2016.

The ruins were similar to a drawn bridge, which gave rise to a well-known urban legend (see below ). The type of bridge was often used by filmmakers in military films [2] , such as “ Meeting on the Elbe ”, “Zhenya, Zhenechka and Katyusha” , “ Shield and Sword ” and others.

Title
The name "Palmburg" (with it. - "Palm City") comes from the name of the estate with agricultural production, located next to the bridge. The owner of the estate grew exotic plants in greenhouses, among which were palm trees [2] .
After the transfer of part of East Prussia to the Soviet Union , the name “Berlin Bridge” was assigned to the bridge among the Russian-speaking population, the old name was practically not used [2] .
Design
There is an opinion that the retreating German troops built the bridge, and over the next sixty years it was never brought down [2] . Contrary to urban legend, the bridge was not a drawbridge, but a precast-monolithic one. Separate blocks were concreted directly on the bridge. The bridge should be called a split , and taking into account the location of most of the supports on land - overpass . [one]
A feature of the bridge was that on the supports located on the banks of the Old and New Pregol elongated spans were placed, with consoles directed towards the channels. On the consoles were placed special inserts. The nodes of the bridge were in stable equilibrium, but mine chambers were provided in the pylons, where explosives could be planted, which would make it possible to disable the bridge at the right time [1] [2] .
On the night of January 29-30, 1945, the commandant of the Konigsberg fortress, General Otto von Lyash, ordered the Palmburg bridge to be blown up to restrain the advance of the Soviet troops . As planned by the architects, the inserts fell into the river, while reducing the depth at its fairway [1] . Soviet troops were forced to go to a long siege, which lasted until April 6, 1945 [2] .
After the breakthrough of the fronts, low-water wooden bridges were built over the arms of the Pregol, and a log cabin was laid overland . In the early 1970s, one of the carriageways was restored [2] .
In the 2000s, bridge reconstruction projects appeared [3] . In 2012, the construction of 22 supports began under a new bridge near the Palmsky [4] .
On December 9, 2013, the ceremony of launching technical traffic on the new bridge across the Staraya and Novaya Pregolya rivers (Berlin Bridge) at the construction of the Southern Bypass of Kaliningrad took place. The length of the bridge is 1.78 km.
In 2014, the dismantling of the bridge began.
January 13, 2015 during the analysis of the support of the old bridge, the structure collapsed. Four workers were killed, two more were injured. According to preliminary data, all of them were on the bridge, there was heavy construction equipment there [5] .
