Biography

Coming from a Jewish orthodox Hasidic family. After the outbreak of World War I, the family moved to Kharkov , where Henry lost his right eye at the age of about eight.

He graduated from the Faculty of History of Leningrad State University , where he was influenced by S. N. Valka , whom he later called his teacher and friend.

Then he worked at the Kharkov Pedagogical Institute and the university . Since 1944 he worked at TsGIAL . In 1947 he defended his thesis at the Moscow Historical and Archival Institute .

In 1947-1960 he worked at the Pskov Pedagogical Institute . He worked at the Novgorod Pedagogical Institute .

In the spring of 1962 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Peasantry of the Pskov province in the second half of the XIX and early XX centuries" in the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (opponents were P. A. Zayonchkovsky , A. S. Nifontov and A. V. Predtechensky ), through the year was awarded the academic title of professor (history of the USSR).

In the spring of 1966 he was elected by competition as a professor at the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. A.I. Herzen , where he worked until 1976.

Since 1989 he lived in the USA .

He died on April 28, 2003.
