Library History
The first city public library in Verkhneudinsk ( Ulan-Ude ) was founded on November 1, 1881 at the initiative of N. S. Nelyubov , the supervisor of the Verkhneudinsky district school .
In the early years, the library was located in the county school building. The library worked from 9 to 12 hours and from 17 to 20 hours on weekdays, and from 11 to 14 hours on holidays. In 1885, the library had 78 subscribers [1] .
The library was created at the expense of money donations from the townspeople, and the basis of its book collections was 732 volumes of books donated by the merchant D. A. Menshikov and the gift of the heirs of the merchant A. P. Losev.
Since 1885, the Verkhneudinsk City Duma began to release 500 rubles for the maintenance and replenishment of the library instead of previously sold 250 rubles a year [2] . The book stock gradually grew, newspapers and magazines were written out. The library has become the center of the cultural life of the city.
In 1923 , after the formation of the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , the library received the status of the Central Regional Collector Library (CSCC).
Since October 1938, the regional library becomes the Republican Public Library, it is named after Maxim Gorky.
Since 1965, after the adoption of the Model Charter, the library became known as the Republican Scientific Library. M. Gorky.
In 1991 , in the year of the 110th anniversary of its foundation, the Library was given the status of the National Library of the Republic of Buryatia by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Republic.
In 2012, the first phase of the library was reconstructed. The conference rooms were updated, the storage facility is equipped with modern mobile racks.
