According to Lennon himself, he and McCartney finished the song literally in front of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards after their concert (The Rolling Stones needed fresh material, and the Beatles offered them this song).
Mick and Kit heard that we have an unfinished song - Paul just sketched this thing, needed a different text or something else. We once played it for them, and they said, “Oh, yes, it's in our style.” In general, Paul and I walked into a corner of the room and finished the song while they stood and talked to themselves. [...] We did it right before their eyes.

We sort of played it roughly to them and they said, 'Yeah, OK, that's our style.' So Paul and I just went off in the corner of the room and finished the song off while they were all still there talking. [...] Right in front of their eyes we did it.- [1]

The Rolling Stones Version
The song in the recording of The Rolling Stones was released on the second single of the group on November 1, 1963 and gained quite considerable popularity, reaching 12th position in the British chart [2] . The group performed the song with a frantic blues-rock composition, in which the characteristic play of Brian Jones on the slide guitar and Bill Wyman’s moving bass part are particularly prominent. The song became one of the few songs of The Rolling Stones, in which Jones back vocals sound. In the USA, the song was released on March 6, 1964 on the B side of the single “ Not Fade Away ”.
The Rolling Stones version was not included in any of the group's studio albums. Later, in 1989 , she was included in the Singles Collection: The London Years .
- In the recording participated:
- Mick Jagger - main vocals
- Brian Jones - Earmuffs, Slide Guitar
- Keith Richards - Rhythm Guitar
- Bill Wyman - Bass

The Beatles included their version of the song in their second album With the Beatles , the main vocal part performed by Ringo Starr [3] . We can conclude that the song was originally written under Starr - in view of the very simple melody, it would be easy for him to perform this song because of the drum kit. According to McCartney,
[...] “I Wanna Be Your Man” was an attempt to give Ringo something like “ Boys, ” a quick song that he could sing behind a drum kit. So, again, she had to be very simple.
Original text[...] I Wanna Be Your Man was to try and give Ringo something like Boys; an uptempo song he could sing from the drums. So again it had to be very simple.- [1]
John Lennon subsequently spoke negatively about this song:
It was a one-time use song. There were only two versions of this song - Ringo and The Rolling Stones. This shows how important we thought it was: we would not give them anything really worthwhile, would we?
Original textIt was a throwaway. The only two versions of the song were Ringo and the Rolling Stones. That shows how much importance we put on it: We weren't going to give them anything great, right?- [4]
However, the group repeatedly performed this song; Among the songs performed at the band’s most recent concert at Candlestick Park (San Francisco, August 29, 1966), this song turned out to be the oldest one written by Lennon-McCartney [1] .
Studio work on the song, despite its simplicity, was quite lengthy. The first test was made on September 11, 1963 (the day after the Beatles offered this song to Jagger and Richards). On September 12, six more doubles were recorded. At the end of the month, George Martin, in the absence of the band members, dubbed a part of the Hammond organ. On October 3, Ringo Starr dubbed the party of maracas, and the song was finally ready only on October 23 [1] .
- In the recording participated: [5]
- Ringo Starr - double recorded and mixed main vocals, drums, maracas
- John Lennon - Echo Guitar, Rhythm Guitar
- Paul McCartney - backing vocals, bass
- George Harrison - Solo Guitar
- George Martin - Hammond Organ
The song was also featured on Meet the Beatles' second American album ! .
