In 1968 he graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University . From 1966 until the end of his life (with short breaks) he worked in the newspaper Moskovskaya Pravda. The author of more than 600 feuilleton. Ace of the newspaper secretariat. As a columnist specializing in cultural topics, he wrote a lot about music and musicians, [3] as well as chess, [4] while he himself played at an amateur level. He also collaborated in Sport Express , Soviet Russia, and in the environmental newspaper Salvation. In 1987-1991 he was the executive secretary in the magazine 64 - Chess Review , then the columnist of the chess publication website. In publications on a chess subject, he often used the literary pseudonym M.Krokh.

In the newspaper Moskovskaya Pravda, Gvozdev, in addition to creative and organizational work, led the chess department. Gvozdyov invented and led the rubric “Remember this name”, where he presented photographs of young beginner chess players with great prospects, according to Gvozdyov. In the Gvozdev section, photos of future world champions Garry Kasparov and Alexandra Kosteniuk , grandmasters Alexander Grischuk , Alexander Morozevich , Maria Manakova were published [2] .

Gvozdyov’s article, “Spots on a Blank Slate ” (2006), on Vladimir Kramnik , in which he severely criticized the sports and human qualities of the world chess champion, received a wide response. [5] An article published in “64” shortly before the author’s death caused an extremely heated debate, neither before nor after Gvozdyov in this spirit, none of the journalists wrote.

The editor-in-chief of “64 - Chess Review” Alexander Roshal , who had been cooperating with Gvozdyov for 40 years, spoke of him like this:

Thinking reporter. This is not to say that he wrote better than anyone. But a professional ... a doer ... an employee - there are few of them. There is a perceptible difference between the author and the journalist. Here Lenya consisted of this difference. What is inside these two concepts is he. [5] .

Gvozdyov’s polemic notes, his peculiar personal assessments, sharp-tongued language, provoked a controversial reaction in the chess community, and more than once were the cause of his conflicts with Russian chess functionaries. At the same time, Garry Kasparov and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov listened to the words of Gvozdyov. Gvozdyov could play chess day and night, he smoked a lot [2] .
