Biography
During the reign of Count Floris II, a gradual increase in the level of the North Sea began, leading to the formation of Zuiderze Bay. This led to an important geographical and political consequence - the separation of East Frisia .
Floris also continued the already traditional feud of the Dutch counts with Flanders and the bishops of Utrecht and Geldern. The dispute with Utrecht was due to territories taken over by Floris' father. However, in the end, Floris managed to make peace with the bishop.
In addition, Floris was able to acquire Rhineland ( Leiden and the surrounding area), and since 1101, the title of Earl of Holland was recognized for Floris. Since that time, the name Holland has finally replaced the name Frisia .
Floris died in 1121, he was succeeded by the young son Dirk VI under the regency of his mother.
Family
OK. 1113, Earl Floris II married Gertrude (Petronella) of Lorraine (d. May 23, 1144), daughter of the Duke of Lorraine Thierry II and Gedwig of Formbach. Thus, Floris became related to the reigning duke of Saxony, Lothar of Supplinburg , who later became emperor of the Holy Roman Empire , since Gertrude was his uterine sister. Married:
- Dirk VI (c. 1110 - August 6, 1157), Earl of Holland since 1121
- Floris the Black (c. 1115 - October 26, 1132), challenged his brother's power over the county
- Simon , Canon in Utrecht
- Gedwig (d. 1132), nun of the Riensburg Abbey
