Biography
After the death of his father in 1061, Dirk V inherited the Dutch county. Because of his infancy, his mother became the regent - Gertrude Saxon, who soon married a second time to Robert Friesian , the youngest son of Count Flanders Baudouin V ; Robert, who became the guardian of the juvenile count, actually became the ruler of Holland.
Robert Friesian successfully repelled the attacks of the Bishop of Utrecht, William I, who pursued a policy of strengthening his influence in the region, thus strengthening the power of Count Dirk. However, shortly after Robert became Earl of Flanders in 1070, West Friesland was captured by the Duke Gottfried III of Lower Lotaring in alliance with Bishop Wilhelm of Utrecht.
After the death of Bishop William in 1076, Count Dirk V was able not only to regain his possessions, but also to capture some other areas of Friesland.
Dirk V became the first Earl, officially named in 1083, "Earl of Holland" (lat. Comes Holtlandensis).
