- regulation of agriculture and food industry based on national and European legislation
- monitoring and control of animal and plant health
- monitoring and management of government bodies operating in the following areas: preparation of studies and consultations, market development and promotion, industrial regulation and development of commercial activities
- direct provision of agricultural and food support services.
History
The Department of Agriculture was created at one of the first meetings of the House of Representatives in 1919 with Robert Burton as his first Minister of Agriculture.
Over the years, its name has changed several times, however, the role of the ministry has remained the same. The department was formerly known as:
