Biography
The eldest son of a major sugar producer and landowner Nikola Artemyevich Tereshchenko and his wife Pelageya Georgievna.
Together with his younger brother Alexander he studied at the Kreiman private gymnasium in Moscow, after which he entered the University of Sv. Vladimir , who graduated with a degree in law. Then for some time served as a cornet in the Life Guards Grodno Hussars . Ivan wooed the daughter of the regiment commander, the beautiful Elizabeth Saranchova. However, her father promised that he would allow the wedding to be played only after the snow fell. Ivan covered the street leading to the bride's house with sugar. Ivan's father did not like this trick, and in April 1880, Ivan, at the insistence of his father, retired and went to Europe to collect works of art.
Tereshchenko devoted his entire future life to collecting works of art and patronage. Ivan became famous throughout the Russian Empire collector of painting. Tereshchenko often competed with Pavel Tretyakov , who spoke about him: “If Tereshchenko sees something in the sky, he will bargain to tears - and still buy!”
Back in May 1876, the Golukhov drawing teacher Nikolay Murashko first addressed Ivan Nikolovich. Murashko asked for money for his private drawing school, founded a year ago. Tereshchenko kept the school Murashko for almost 25 years.
On January 19, 1903, Ivan's father died in Kiev, but he could not guide his father on his last journey, as he had been sick with tuberculosis for several years and had to live in southern France. February 11, 1903 Ivan Nikolovich died in his villa "Mariposa" in Cannes.
