Content

Description

European cupcake up to 35 cm long, from 50 to 55 cm wide. The upper body and chest are bluish-gray, the throat is white with a black stripe. On the sides of the body there are transverse stripes of gray, black, beige, black and reddish-brown. The eyes are red-brown, the beak is red, the legs are reddish.

Distribution

European chummies currently live in the Alps, Italy , Turkey , Greece and Western Asia . The bird inhabits sunny grassy meadows between the forest border and the snow line , and rocky plains in the south. The bird runs and climbs well, flies easily and quickly, eats a variety of plant material and small animals, as well as cereal shoots.

Alectoris graeca graeca

In winter, birds live in large flocks, in spring pairs form. The female lays in the Alps in June or July in a hole under a bush or under a ledge of a rock from 12 to 15 yellowish-white eggs with brown specks that hatch for 26 days.

Subspecies

  • A. g. saxatilis is common in the Alps and Apennines , down to Slovenia
  • A. g. whitakeri lives in sicily
  • A. g. graeca nominative form found in the Balkans
