Story

The choir celebrates Christmas and faces a dilemma when it is possible to perform at two events on the same day [2] . Irish student Rory Flanagan (Damian McGinty) misses her home and finds a friend in the person of Sam Evans ( Cord Overstreet ), who is also away from his family [3] .

Creation

The series was the directorial debut of actor Matthew Morrison , who plays the role of Will Schuster in the series. The fact that he will direct the Christmas series, Morrison announced at an acoustic evening at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles at the end of September 2011 [4] . The episode was not the eighth in a row in the season, as previously assumed, but the ninth [5] .

The episode featured songs included in the Christmas album Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album Volume 2 . The eponymous song, “Extraordinary Merry Christmas”, written specifically for the series, will be performed by Darren Criss and Leah Michel , who play the roles of Blaine and Rachel, respectively [6] [7] . Another original song, “Christmas Eve With You,” as well as a cover version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” will be performed by Mercedes Jones, played by Amber Riley [8] . The song “Little Drummer Boy” will be performed by Kevin McHale , and “ Let It Snow ” by Darren Criss and Chris Colfer [6] . Also for the episode, a song by Damian McGinty, played by Rory Flanagan, and a song that was shot on Thanksgiving with the participation of “a large number of children”, was prepared in the same way as Sue Sylvester ( Jane Lynch ) sang a song with patients in the last year’s Christmas episode Children's Hospital [9] [10] . In total, six holiday compositions will appear in the episode [11] .

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Matthew Morrison said that the series will mention the Star Wars franchise and actress Judy Garland . The company Lucasfilm gave the series the right to use their character, Chewbacca , and the actor who played him took part in one day of filming, but did not play musical numbers [11] . As a result, the scene was not included in the shown version of the episode.

The episode is the middle of the third season. Before the start of the third season, the creator of the series, Brad Falchak, said that the new season will be divided into two mini-seasons that simulate school semesters, and the Christmas episode will end the fall half of the year [12] [13] . Filming of the series began on November 10, 2011, simultaneously with the eighth, which they finished shooting on November 21 [14] [15] , and filming of the ninth ended on November 29 [16] .
