Biography

Born February 23, 1936 in in New Jersey in the USA .

He studied at the Workshop of Christ the Savior in Johnstown ( PA ).

He took monastic tonsure. On January 11, 1959, he was ordained a priest [1] by the bishop of Agathonica Orestes (Chernyak) . He served in the church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Windbridge, after which he went to Istanbul to continue his theological education at the famous Theological School on the island of Halki .

At the request of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Athenagoras nurtured the Orthodox Istanbulites of Slavic origin. He also made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and lived for some time on Mount Athos .

Returning to the United States, Hieromonk Nikolai continued his education, and then he himself became a teacher at the seminary in Johnstown.

In 1963, he was appointed director of the seminary of Christ the Savior in Johnstown ( PA ).

In 1971 he was appointed cleric of the Church of St. Nicholas in New York.

January 23, 1977 was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite [1] .

On March 13, 1983, at the Mariinsky Church in Allentown , Pennsylvania, he was ordained bishop of Amis, Vicar of Metropolitan Andrey of Eucarpia, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in America . The rank of consecration was performed by American Archbishop Jacob (Kukuzis) , Metropolitan Andrey of Evkarpia (Kushchak) , Bishops of Nyssa John (Martin) and Meloy Philotheus (Karamitsos) [2] .

After the sudden death of the ruling bishop of the American Carpathian diocese of Bishop John of Nyssa (Martin) on September 30, 1984, an extraordinary meeting of the diocese, held on November 26 of the same year, elected Bishop Nicholas as a candidate for the seat of the American Carpathian archpastor.

On March 20, 1985, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople approved this election. On April 19 of the same year, he was consecrated at the Johnstown Cathedral of Christ the Savior, performed by the Greek Archbishop Jacob of America (Cucusis) .

On November 24, 1997, by the decision of the Holy Synod, he was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan .

He died on March 13, 2011 at a hospital in Windber , Pennsylvania , from cancer. On March 18, Metropolitan Nicholas, led by Archbishop Demetrius (Trakatellis), took place in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Johnstown. After the funeral, the body of the late hierarch was delivered to the church of St. John the Baptist in Perth Amboy, the hometown of Metropolitan Nicholas. The burial took place at the parish cemetery of this temple on March 21 [3] .
