Rhine-Express (RE5) ( German: Rhein-Express ) - regional express passenger line in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate ( Germany ). It connects the most important cities of North Rhine-Westphalia Düsseldorf , Cologne , Bonn with one of the most important cities of Rhineland-Palatinate - Koblenz . The express movement is carried out on tracks intended for fast trains at a speed of 160 km / h. Express RE5 carries about 27,500 passengers per day [1] .

History

Express RE5 at Emmerich am Rhein station

The emergence of regional express trains on German railways was associated with the optimization of the traffic system. Prior to this, there were either commuter trains or fast trains . To improve the communication system, it was decided to create an intermediate class of trains, transferring some functions of fast trains to commuter trains.
The Rhine Express (RE5) was commissioned in 1998 . Initially, he stopped at all stations and was more likely to be of the type of Regionalbahn train, rather than Regional-Express . In December 2002, the train schedule was changed, the speed was increased to 160 km / h and stops at a number of stations were canceled, as a result of which only between Cologne and Koblenz travel time was reduced by more than 30 minutes.

Railway sections

The Rhine Express passes through sections of four railways:

  • section of the Oberhausen-Arnhem railway from Emmerich to Oberhausen ;
  • section of the Duisburg-Dortmund railway from Oberhausen to Duisburg ;
  • Cologne-Duisburg Railway;
  • section of the Left Bank Rhine Railway (Cologne- Mainz ) from Cologne to Koblenz.

Move Interval

According to the schedule, express RE5 runs once an hour.
