Marcy Brothers

Giant Enkelad by the Marcy Brothers

The Gaspard brothers (born in 1624 , died on December 10, 1681 ) and Balthazar (baptized on January 6, 1628 , died in May 1674 ) were Martian French sculptors. They were born in the city of Cambrai in the family of the sculptor and subsequently moved to Paris , where they entered the service of King Louis XIV . They were tasked with decorating the palace and gardens at Versailles. It is very difficult to establish the individual work of each of the brothers, because they always worked together.

Their sister Jeanne in 1663 married the sculptor Pierre Le Grou the Elder and became the mother of the sculptor Pierre Le Grou the Younger .

Works

  • The brothers sculpted a tomb for the Polish king Jan Casimir , located in the church of the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés .
  • They received their recognition for their work on the sculptural group of the Latona Basin (1668-1670), one of the main compositions in the gardens of Versailles , which presents an episode related to the goddess Leto from the poem of Ovid [1] .
  • Bosquet "Enkelad" 1675—1677 in the gardens of Versailles
