Phelps, Fred

Fred Waldron Phelps Sr. ( born Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr .; November 13, 1929 , Meridian , Mississippi - March 19, 2014 , Topeka , Kansas ) - American Protestant pastor , head of the Westboro Baptist Church . He is best known for his radical statements (in particular, the saying “God Hates Fags ” (associated with the church he founded) and his actions directed against LGBT people and supporters of the movement for the rights of sexual and gender minorities gained popularity. According to Phelps' religious beliefs, homosexuality and its acceptance [ specify ] doom most of the world to an eternal damnation . Phelps became widely known after Matthew Shepard ’s death, when he was asked for permission to erect a monument depicting Shepard and the words “Matthew Shepard went to hell on October 12, 1998 for violating God's warning:“ Do not go to bed with a man like a woman, it's an abomination ( Leviticus 18:22) “”. This was refused to him.

In 2009, for "inciting hatred that could lead to violence," he and his daughter Shirley were barred from entering the UK [1] .

In 2013, the health of Fred Phelps began to deteriorate greatly. In August 2013, Fred Phelps was excommunicated by decision of the Council of Elders. Soon, due to a more critical serious health condition, Phelps was identified at the local hospice , where he died on March 19, 2014.

The sixth of thirteen children of Fred Phelps, Nathan Phelps, lived with his three brothers and sisters separately from his father from the age of 18 until the latter's death in 2014. Nathan Phelps officially left the Westboro Baptist Church in 1980 and has since condemned this religious group. He became an LGBT rights activist. [2]
