History
First mentioned in sources in 1193. Like all surrounding territories, Vimy was the site of numerous battles of the French, Spanish, English and Dutch troops in the XIV, XVII and XVIII centuries. The battle of the First World War on April 9-12, 1917, known as the Battle of Wimi , became the most famous. The Canadian Forces played a key role in this, and this battle became an important page in the history of Canada.
In 1922, the area near the highest point of Vimy Hill was handed over by the French authorities to the people of Canada in gratitude for the merits of Canadians during the war. On July 26, 1936, the Canadian National Memorial , the largest Canadian war memorial, was opened here. It was opened by the King of Great Britain Edward VIII (as King of Canada) and French President Albert Lebrun in the presence of 50 thousand Canadian and French war veterans.
