Biography
Pinhos Gelman was born in the family of Rabbi Israel Froim Gelman. He studied with Rabbi Chaim of Grodno in the city of Svobodny. Subsequently, he worked in Yekaterinoslav and was a member of the city duma, he lived on Mostovaya street. Studying Roman law and made parallels with Jewish law. Created a number of Yekaterinoslav yeshivas. Rabbi Gelman was published in various publications such as "Akhdut", "Ozman", etc.
In 1908, he was elected to the post of rabbi of the central part of the city Yekaterinoslav , who before his death was caused by an unsuccessful surgical operation.

Rabbi Pinhos Gelman brought up many students, among them:

- Leib Levin (Rabbi of the Moscow Choral Synagogue)
- Mordechai Radzinsky (Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk after the Second World War)

Memory
Rabbi Pinhos Gelman was buried in the old Jewish cemetery of Dnepropetrovsk in 1921. However, in 1968 they decided to disband the cemetery and Gelman’s coffin was reburied in another Jewish cemetery.
In 1980, in connection with the disbanding of this cemetery, the body of Pinhos Gelman was reburied for the third time. This time at the Jewish cemetery in the Western massif of the city of Dnepropetrovsk. At the site of the last burial of the Jewish community of the city of Dnepropetrovsk, it was decided to erect a monument to a rabbi to reflect his contribution to the development of the Jewish community of Dnepropetrovsk.
The monument was erected on December 16, 2007 with donations from the Golden Rose synagogue and with the support of the Hevra Kadish funeral community of the Dnepropetrovsk Jewish community. Architects of the monument: Rostislav and Nikolay Shitikov.
