The species was named and described in 2011-2012 by researchers Michael Ryan, David Evans, Philip Curry, Caleb Brown and Donald Brinkman. The name of the genus comes from UNESCO , and the ancient Greek words κέρας, keras - “horns”, and ὤψ, oops - “face / face”. The species designation is given in honor of the paleontologist Eva Koppelhus.
The remains, the TMP holotype 95.12.6, were found in the Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta , Canada , in the Steveville Badlands area, in geological formations dating back to the Campanian age . They consist of a partial lower jaw.
Unescoceratops was a small dinosaur about one and a half meters long. The lower fragment of the jaw is about 15 cm in length. Researchers have placed this dinosaur in the Leptoceratopidae family. According to the cladistic analysis, the genus Unescoceratops is a sister genus of Zhuchengceratops , found in China [1] .
