Biography
Since 1919 he worked as a teacher in Malaya Vishera . In 1928 he graduated from the Leningrad Agricultural Institute . Since 1932, a researcher, professor at the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. Herzen . Corresponding member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences ( 1955 ), doctor of pedagogical sciences, professor ( 1957 ), member of the Union of Writers of the USSR since 1952 .
Scientific and pedagogical activity
In the Leningrad branch of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, he headed the laboratory of the methodology of teaching botany and zoology . He is the author of various curricula, manuals “Agrobiological section of a secondary school”, “Experience with plants in a living corner”, “Extra-curricular work on botany”, “Methods of working with students at a school site”, “How to make a herbarium”), and for schoolchildren 5 6th grade writes an original textbook of botany. A biology textbook for grades 9-10 has been published several times.
Creativity
As the author of books for children, he first appeared in 1942 with the book “A Hospital in the Forest”, telling about the plants useful to humans. Very popular was his repeatedly published book "Following the Tracks of Robinson" ( 1946 ).
In his books (often illustrated by author’s photographs) he talked about the importance of plants in human life, reported interesting facts from history, geography, archeology , clearly revealing the main theme of books, and gave advice on caring for plants.
In his work, Verzilin was the continuation of the traditions of Russian naturalistic fiction . He did not use extraneous plots, but relied on the opportunities provided by the material itself. This is also indicated by the names of his books - “In the Footsteps of Robinson”, “Traveling with Domestic Plants”, “Plants in Human Life” [1] .
