Biography

The date of birth of Anastasios Vafiadis is not known. The birthplace, according to the modern Greek historian Konstantin Vakalopoulos, is the city of Monastir, now Bitola [1] .

The Pandectis Digital Library calls the birthplace the high-mountain village of Megarovo (Magarevo), west of Monastir [2] .

Sometimes his connection with the Greek city of Siatista , Western Macedonia is indicated, but it is more likely that one of his parents came from this city.

As a student in Athens, Wafiadis entered revolutionary circles. His close friend was Sotiriou, Zisis , a veteran of the Greek Revolution of 1821, who signed in his proclamations and appeals as "Hellen Olympus "

Together with him, Vafiadis joined the "Greek Legion", whose volunteers went to Italy and took part in the battles against the Austrians, on the side of Giuseppe Garibaldi .

His name is mentioned by a number of Greek Garibaldians, revolutionaries Sotiriou and I. Sekulis, officers N. Smolenskis and Praidis, Alexandros and students L. Zikos and L. Vulgaris [3] .

The Greek explorer Christos Lazos mentions Vafiadis as a participant in the Sicilian campaign of Garibaldi and the battle of Calatafimi , in May 1860 [4] .

In his memoirs, S. Malakis writes that he met Vafiadis on June 21 of that year in Livorno , waiting for Sotiriu to volunteer again to go to Garibaldi, in Aspromonte [4] .

Returning to Greece, the Greek Garibaldians played a significant role in shaping revolutionary ideas in the country.

In 1866, with the beginning of the next Cretan rebellion, Anastasios Vafiadis organized a corps of volunteers in Athens, with whom he went to help the rebellious island. Leading his corps, Vafiadis died in a bloody battle with the Turks at Wafa, October 12, 1866. In the same battle and on the same day, his comrade in Italy Praidis, Alexandros , died.

Lieutenant General Ioannis Kakudakis, director of the Department of History of the Greek Army, in his work, partially explains the large number of Cretan volunteers in the struggle for Macedonia at the beginning of the 20th century, as Crete's repeated return of the blood spilled by the Macedonian volunteers, mentioning Wafiadis, during all Cretan revolts [5] .
