The Libertarian Alliance ( LA ) is the name of two libertarian think tanks in the UK advocating for a free-market economy and civil liberties . According to the websites of both organizations, “The Libertarian Alliance is a non-partisan group waging a struggle against statism in all its forms and for the creation of a truly free society.” [1] [2]
It is believed that their defense of complete freedom of speech , the elimination of taxation and state intervention in economic and social life combines the elements of liberalism , conservatism and anarcho-capitalism . [3]
In total, they published about 800 works by more than 280 authors. Previously, the press organ of LA was Free Life magazine. Most of the current LA publications are online .
History
The Libertarian Alliance was originally founded in 1977 by Mark Brady, Judy Englender, David Ramsey Steele and Chris Tam in Woking . It was an alliance of libertarians and classical liberals . LA was not the successor of either the Radical Libertarian Alliance founded by Mark Brady, Pauline Russell and Chris Tam in late 1971 , or the earlier Young Libertarians founded by David Middelton in the late 1960s. x [one]
The principles of LA were formulated by its founders and written down by David Ramsey Steele. The aircraft did not have an official leader , but it had a chairman , secretary and treasurer . For some time, the informal center of the aircraft was established in 1978 , the bookstore Alternative Bookshop . [one]
In 1982 , confrontation within the organization led to its split. [4] Since then, there have been two groups that use the name of the Libertarian Alliance, the same logo and the slogan “Let thousands of libertarian alliances blossom!” [1] Although this has not always been the case in the past, at present two groups maintain friendly relations and some English libertarians are members of both groups. Despite this, their reunification in the near future does not seem possible.
Currently
One of the groups runs libertarian.co.uk and a blog. Its current president and director of another Libertarian Alliance is Dr. Sean Gabb , as Dr. Tim Evans resigned in February 2011. [5] The Libertarian Alliance is a member of the Backlash group, formed in 2005 to counter the new law that established criminal liability for possession of “extreme pornography ”.
