The Minister of Health and Family Welfare is a member of the Council of Ministers.
The Ministry consists of three departments: the Department of Health, the Department of Family Welfare, and the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. It regularly publishes a journal on the Indian Pharmacopoeia since 1955 through the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, an autonomous body under the Ministry that sets quality standards for drugs, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices and technologies.
