The valley is located in a mountainous area a hundred kilometers northwest of Hobart near the town of Maiden . The area is inaccessible, with many rivers and streams flowing into the Styx River, a tributary of Derwent . Styx Valley, part of the UNESCO Tasmanian Wildlife Site , is covered in primeval rainforest with a unique Tasmanian biota .
The highest tree of the planet regal eucalyptus grows in the valley, as well as atherosperm , Cunningham notophagus , endemic to the island of Phyllocladus aspleniifolius , Antarctic tree fern , many mosses and lichens . In 2002, a huge eucalyptus called El Grande was discovered in the valley, but it was damaged and destroyed by fire in April 2003. In December 2003, the tree died. [1] [2]
In the 2000s, the territory of the valley became the object of a struggle between ecologists and forestry companies .
Southwest is the Southwest National Park. [3] To the north is the Upper Florentine Valley , to the east is Veld .
