Osumi [1] ( 隅 大 隅 海峡 O: sumi-kaikyo:) is the northernmost strait in the Ryukyu island ridge, between the island of Kyushu ( Japanese islands ) and the islands of . Connects the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea .

The length of the strait is about 55 km, the width is from 28 to 45 km, the depths reach 70-150 m. The magnitude of the tides is in the range of 2-2.5 m. Constant currents in the east. The maximum speeds (in the periods May – August and January – February) reach 7.5–9 km / h.
